Watch one of them drink nectar -- they unroll this like inch-long tongue to reach into the flower. Totally amazing.
(I was down at my parents' house in NJ this weekend, and they've got sphinx moths and hummingbirds competing for flowers, which is very funny because they're surprisingly close to the same size. But the hummingbirds totally win, because they are psycho.)
Wow, I had no idea that these freaky little guys were members of such a varied and uniformly-freaky family (http://bugguide.net/node/view/193). Awesome.
We thought for a moment that this little guy might be a hummingbird, but then we noticed the antennae and the legs. :) We didn't get a good look at the proboscis because of the angle, so I don't know how long it was, truth be told.
