I think I would distinguish between going to the store to sort out a plan and getting a phone. "Free phones" usually mean a two year contract extension. You can get decent deals on "unlocked" phones on Amazon. Tom got a new one recently, and it was half the price on Amazon. (When compared to the list price offered in the store.)
