One note about jump-starting, which many people don't know: Connecting the final lead directly to the negative battery terminal (rather than to the frame of the car, which is connected to the negative) has a small chance of causing the battery to explode. (The battery slowly releases hydrogen, and a buildup could ignite.) Most mechanics, while aware of the danger, do it anyway, because connecting to the terminal works much better. If the frame doesn't work well enough, and I connect the lead to the terminal, I like to be wearing goggles. (Parts of you that aren't your eyes are unlikely to suffer irreparable harm from the spraying sulfuric acid.)
