The most amusing blog I've found in recent days: The Iceland Weather Report
The most recent entry has some great stuff on Icelandic idioms that everyone who loves language should check out.  (I'm looking at you, [personal profile] ukelele.)

Thanks to [personal profile] eldan for the link.

yay!

I should start in with some Turkish ones. My favourite is "on which mountain did a wolf die?", for "what made you so upset?".

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing... I have been noodling around the site, wasting time in between meetings today. Very amusing, and now added to my "random blogs to read" list. (I particularly like "Hann stóð á öndinni" as an expression of overwhelming astonishment.)

I've been meaning to ask: when, precisely, are you planning to go to Iceland?

We're going to depart on the 5th and return on the 18th. Long honeymoon (...well, OK, I guess I should remember who I'm talking to here ;) ). We've finally made reservations for the car and 8 of the 12 nights, and I am starting to get REALLY excited. :)

My personal favorite is:

He stood on the duck
Hann stóð á öndinni
[i.e. when someone is so astonished or excited that he can't speak]

It reminds me of when I feel my cat with the balls of my feet. . .what it might feel like if I stood up with all of the general squishiness. She stands on my soft parts all the time, but it wouldn't be fair to reciprocate.

Who is astonished, the duck or the human?
