Gay marriage in Iowa??

It's a single judge's decision, nothing like a State Supremes decision, so it's just a wee bit too early to celebrate (though some people are rightfully jumping at the chance to marry). But Iowa! That's, like, right next door!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ukelele for the link.

1. Not yet. We've been this far, and further, in several states, without getting there. Lower courts have ruled for gay marriage only to be overturned in higher courts. Or, in Hawaii, it got all the way to the supreme court ruling for gay marriage, and was overturned by a constitutional amendment.

2. It *is* right next door. Iowa's second-biggest city is a 3 hour drive from you. Do something?

I thought this was further than Hawai'i. In this case, the couple now has an issued AND executed marriage license. I thought the couples in Hawai'i never got to execute their licenses.

I thought of you, and your reaction to the 2006 election (and anti-gay marriage referendums) when I read about that yesterday. I figured you'd be pleasantly surprised. =)

This gave Sarah, a born and bred Minnesotan, a Ruplestiltskin like fit. "IOWA? Really? Iowa?" Wish we knew this before we booked a location in Minnesota. We'd have gotten married there in a state that might end this useless form of discrimination.

Iowa is actually fairly liberal for a farm state.

They've got an actual sizable Socialist state-wide political party, several large universities (totaling over 2% of the state population), a number of smaller state schools, and a history of being much more socially progressive than other places in the farm-belt.

So, it wouldn't surprise me, if it became law. But it will take years.
