(no subject)

This post is worth reading -- LJ is willing to donate $30 to DonorsChoose for every user who sends email to donorschoose@sixapart.com requesting it; basically they'll send you an electronic gift certificate to spend on any of the DonorsChoose projects, which are basically small grants written by teachers in poor communities looking for funding for classroom supplies. (It may be no substitute for adequate funding, but it's a hell of a lot better than teachers taking out loans...) I've donated to DonorsChoose before; it's pretty rewarding, 'cause you eventually get a packet of handwritten thank you letters from the kiddos.

Go! Now! Request your $30 gift certificate! It costs you nothing but a few minutes of project-surfing to figure out where you want to put the money. You have to email the above address by 5 pm, Monday, October 5 or the money goes poof.

I've got my certificate! This is awesome. Now the hard part... which of the oodles of worthy projects to choose?

Currently I'm leaning toward this (http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=85990&challengeid=17037), I think. They already have the ukeleles, so protecting them seems very worthwhile. Plus, it makes me think of Ukelele...

*some more searching around*

Any suggestions?

I'd go with that. The poor project's been languishing unfunded and unloved since February - I'm sure enough people on [livejournal.com profile] eirias and [livejournal.com profile] ukelele's friend lists could club together to add up enough $30s.

(I'm not in the US, but don't have any problem making up a US postal address)

I like that idea. :) I went ahead and put some money there.
Too bad I don't think I can donate in honor of someone like you can when you donate to some other orgs ;)

thanks for telling me about this!

wow, there are numerous great projects.

Thanks for letting us know about this!

I'm wondering if by doing this they're trying to get people to donate some of their own money to the projects as well. If so, it worked on me. I wanted to complete a project, and I found one that needed $42, so I completed it with some cash of my own.

I'm fairly sure they are hoping some people will. I think they want to donate to charity, get good publicity for doing it, make Six Apart look good by showing that its people are generous and thus get more good publicity, advertise a charity that actually does seem really good, and actually help people. Not all of that is as pure and selfless, but it's still pretty cool.

Anyhow, I'm curious - which project did you help to finish? There are so many good ones; it's really nice of you to help one happen.

It was called "wildcats ready to read" and it involved getting both books and books on CD because the kids never get read to at home.

Nifty! But now I wonder how long it will take them to run out of gift certificates and create an internet kerfuffle.

Wow, that almost sounds too generous to be true, I'm surprised this company is large enough to be able to afford that. But I've sent my email. Thanks for the head's up!

ALSO you can request the gc's from multiple email addresses and you dont have to be affiliated iwth lj in any way to do it.

[identity profile] leora.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but I wouldn't recommend doing that, since taking advantage of an already generous offer might discourage them from doing this sort of thing again.

People can do whatever they like. I'm not sure how me doing this 5 times is any different than telling 4 friends. They are legitimate addresses i use, i did not create them for the sole purpose of taking advantage of 6A and in no way did I try to hide my identity. It's not like I requested a hundred thousand thirty dollar gift certificates with the intent of breaking their bank. I requested 5 in total so i could give 30$ donations to multiple projects.
