The Kid (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0452281768/102-5233184-3398506) (the book) is great. I read it a few years ago, and I have to admit that it did change my impression of Dan Savage. He's definitely kinder and gentler than you'd think from reading just the columns. ;)
Yeah, my official opinion of Savage is that he's an irredeemable asshole, but I somehow keep reading his columns, because sometimes he's a funny irredeemable asshole, and occasionally he even has reasonable advice. And I do think he's actually become a bit kinder in gentler even in Savage Love in the last few years.
(But really, what's the fun of an advice column where you agree with the person giving advice? Half the point of reading them is to say, "No, you (#*&$% moron, that's not it at all!")
The book is great, and has some surprisingly thoughtful discussions of adoption, and how gay couples and infertile couples have different attitudes towards it, and how society has different expectations of gay and straight couples.
That cracked me up, because the eeee! and I have joked that a kid would rebel against us by becoming Amish, or some kind of anti-science, anti-everything Christian fundamentalist.
This totally kills my image of Dan Savage. He has a kid? That's way too domestic. Next thing you know he has a house in the burbs, two dogs and a Range Rover.
I think it's way funnier to think of the King of Perversion living a quiet domestic life, actually. It suggests that there is a flip side: any random stranger you see on the bus going to work could be wearing opposite-sex underwear, or could be a secret Wilt Chamberlain, or could be daydreaming about sex with an old lady wearing a snorkel.
(OTOH, if I had my druthers, there wouldn't be any burbs, so I'm with you on that one. ;) )
