Overheard in my coffee shop:
Woman 1: "Napa Valley is the widest place I've ever been... it's also the whitest place I've ever been, and wealthy -- really wealthy. No normal people, you know, like us."
Woman 2: "No Hispanics?"
Woman 1: "Well, yeah, there were Hispanics, but they were all in the fields... and you know I always think of Hispanics as white."

Later, on further thought, Woman 1 noted "and you know now that I say that, I look around in here and everyone here is white, too." Well, you know, try Wisconsin some time and see how that compares.

In other news: Obama speaks on race
It's beautiful, not perfect, but beautiful; and it reminds me why I fell in love with his mind when I read his memoir. Of course, the converted aren't the people he's preaching to. I hope it does what he needs it to do.

Also, I'm trying to decide if it's possible to determine the race of those speaking. My eventual response is "Nope." I guess that's a good thing?

Obama's speech is indeed brilliant. I like how he really tries to address race in a collaborative manner. I also like how he addresses white anger/resentment because often that gets ignored in talks about race, which in turn creates more anger and division. I just like how he acknowledges everyone's hardships and encourages everyone to work TOGETHER to overcome these problems. I'd be interested in hearing what other people's opinions on his talk are, in particular those who have been disadvantaged and have dealt more directly with racial issues than I have.
