So I'm listening to this Belle & Sebastian song about vampires, and I'm thinking about vampire mythology, about drinking their blood and rising in three days to life eternal, and I'm wondering, how did the evolution of the mythologies surrounding vampirism and Christianity dovetail?

i wonder if it centers around the idea that eternal life can be a blessing/curse

I was always given to understand that that portion of the lore arose as an inversion of Christ rising from the dead - IE, Jesus did it first, and superstitious Christian peasants decided that these things rose in the same time in devilish mockery of the "real" resurrection.

Wait, is this an extra real life connection between me and [livejournal.com profile] akiko? (We met on the internet but have a ton of odd two-degree connections.) Or is this effectively a sort of connection I already knew about -- do you know each other through Juniata?

Oddly enough, we know each other through an LJ community, not directly from Juniata (or Marburg), despite that common connection.
