no, i think per wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpaca), they are different. alpacas are Vicugna pacos, and llamas are Lama glama (isn't that an awesome name?!?). they're both in the same family, camelids, though.
i just really like alpacas because the are so cute and make such nice fiber for yarn.
marphod loves to say "alpaca" in a very silly voice. All those surprised?
(When I was making a shawl for his gf and picking out yarn, he kept expressing "preference" for alpaca, or at least saying it over and over and over again).
So did radicalteacher, I seem to remember. :) There was a fair in Madtown a few years ago. She went with her then-new-gf (now-wife), and I tagged along. They were very cute. (The alpacas, too. :) )
I love camelids! (Particularly newly shorn alpacas, who then have these ENORMOUS puffy heads on their stem-like necks (http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/images/2007/05/01/aptopix.jpg).)
