Against rather steep odds, Mari & I got the grant we applied for to fund me in Finland. This means I can actually go.

Sent in my res permit app yesterday - unless they go outside of their window of how long it's supposed to take, I'll have it by the time I need to leave ;). But I applied for an extra-long stay just in case I don't have it by that time.

This also means I do not need to work myself to death trying to finish prelim #2 by Sept. 1 in order to apply for the smaller-but-still-sufficient travel grant offered by my university. Priority is now redistributed to finishing the paper and designing 2 experiments. November 1 is a good goal, though, because then I can be a dissertator before leaving.

So freakin' cool. If anyone wants me to bring back some salmiakki, speak up!

There'll be some, but not a lot. I'll basically be sandwiching the winter solstice, on which there's about 6 hours of late-afternoon-to-dusk-like daylight. If you want to visit you should, by all means! :) I can't guarantee what accomodations will be like but air mattresses should be cheap. Currently the only "blackout dates" are right around Christmas because Graham is going to be visiting then. I should be in Helsinki November 1 through March 1, approximately.

Yeah, we will totally have to get together.

Are you planning to go back to the US for Thanksgiving? I'm not, and if you're not either, maybe that would be a fun time to meet up? Tickets from Hki to London are not actually that expensive, even nonstop... otherwise I'll have a few months to play with :).

Although I am obviously glad you get to go to Finland, some small part of me is sad that I will no longer get to drink with you a few scant hours after you walk out of prelims. We shall simply have to find another excuse :-)

That would be excellent! :)
Again, no idea what kind of crash space I'll have to offer (I'll know when I get there), but you would both be welcome to stay with me if there's room. Or you could ask [livejournal.com profile] chrysaphi about hotels - she stayed in a hotel somewhere when she visited me in 2001. (OTOH, that was so many voyages ago for her, she may well not remember a thing. :) )
