annoyance

So the one thing I consistently hate about my university's network is that Macs and PCs have no way to talk to each other. I hate this precisely because I know it is possible to do it another way and our lab techs like to pretend that it's not. This is inconvenient as my stimuli are made on a PC and used on a Mac. In the past, I have come up with various hacks to get around this problem, including doing a bunch of file transfers over the web. However, this is annoying for the main reason that I only have 200 MB of storage on my University web space, and the ZIP file containing my stimuli is 219 MB. I could split it up into 2, but it took half an hour to compress and I don't want to have to wait again. Anyone want to offer me temporary space on an FTP server or something? Pretty please?

Off to serve my community over lunch or something.

If the Macs are running OSX, and if they have remote shell (login) turned on, then you can use scp (or on windows, PuTTY and PSCP, Google for putty) and copy things that way.

Also, you could buy and iPod. ;-)

Thanks - FTPing in seems to be working (as I alluded in another comment).

what kind of computers are you working with here? A flash memory stick won't work?

Would it hold 250 MB? If so, that would totally rock. :)

it's bigger

I think mine holds 251 for future reference.

Actually - never mind; Mo's suggestion worked. I'd forgotten about that workaround. It's annoying because I don't actually use OSX most of the time (it needs drivers to work with our equipment and AFAIK no one knows the administrator password). But it's workable.

If you still need space when you see this comment, let me know. I've got about 500 MB of space on my webserver at the moment.

If you still need space at the end of the work day, you are welcome to use my main box at home. (It's currently shut down to conserve power while I was out of town, but since that was over a week ago, maybe I should think about turning it on again.) You can have as much space as you need.
