My childhood vacation spot (where I just took Graham a few weeks ago) is having a near miss with Hurricane Ophelia. (Nags Head is somewhere north of the pointy bit where the island starts curving north and then northwest.)

[livejournal.com profile] kirinn and [livejournal.com profile] ayb2, looks like you've got a lot of rain coming your way... hope your shoes stay dry.

ETA: OK, maybe that's more like a "near hit" around tomorrow - the storm is expected to go right along the coast. Sniff. But at least my friends' shoes aren't a matter of concern ;)

Up here we're mostly just getting sporadic short-but-heavy showers as various bands pass over for a couple days, it looks like. The surreal thing is that due to the hurricane rotation the storms all pass over NE-to-SW, which is highly unusual. I have to backwards-ify my prediction sense when looking at the local radar.

Fortunately it looks like a Category 1 as it skims to coast.... nothing to sneeze at, certainly, but shouldn't be utterly destroying things.

Poor Mindy; she just moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in July and is dealing with her first summer of Souther Heat, lack of basements, Palmetto Bugs, and now hurricanes.

(Myrtle Beach is centered on the map here (http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?ID=LTX&region=c5&lat=33.76119232&lon=-78.79833984&label=Myrtle%20Beach%2c%20SC))
