There's a nice piece on gay marriage, polyamory, and the "slippery slope" over at Andrew Sullivan's blog, written by guest blogger Julian Sanchez. The gist of the piece is, A) the slope doesn't really go anywhere particularly bad, and more to the point, B) it's actually not all that slippery anyway. I have copied it for my own records because I can never find anything in AS's archives, so if you want to read the essay and it's slipped off the main page, I can send you a .txt file of it.

EDIT: Do not, under any circumstances, read the commentary at Julian Sanchez's blog. It turns out that the obnoxiousness of flame wars is constant for a wide variety of literacy levels. This is where intellectual-elitists are missing the point -- it's trivially easy to be bright and also an asshole.

("Julian Sanchez" -- coolest name in the blogosphere. Except maybe for "Juan Non-Volokh.")

(You mean because of the ethnic clashing? Yeah, it is pretty neat. I think the same thing of Juan Cole.)

(Growing up, my best friend and I used to have endless fun inventing oddly-paired names like that. I still giggle to myself thinking about it.)

On a completely unrelated note . .

Yes, [livejournal.com profile] cynic51, I'm talking your friend's again . . .

Do you know anything about the Finnish group Rajaton? Apparently they are performing with the Minnesota Orchestra in the Twin Cities in March, and all i can find on them is that they are an acapella group that has one hell of an ABBA show . . .

No idea at all, though you can find their webpage here (http://www.rajaton.org/main.site?set_language=eng), but I suspect you've already found that...

I note with much frustration that they won't be playing in Helsinki till shortly after I leave. Dangit. I really want to find concerts to go here out here to get me out of my office before 8 pm, but I'm having no luck!

If you're back in the US by March 24/25, they are appearing with the MN Orchestra in their weekender pops series in Minneapolis, a scant 4 hours from Madison--of course, this doesn't help your current situation in Helsinki, does it:)

I do agree to some extent with his points...I don't really see multi-person marriages, or allowing people to marry multiple people, even, as an extension of the current cultural view of marriage. It's a subversion of marriage. And really, it is an attack on the worldview of a lot of people, so I can understand why they get kinda punchy. I see it as part of the divide between being gay and being queer; a lot of people with same-sex preferences have been working to make being "gay" a socially acceptable label, which is both understandable and non-offensive to me. However, as a person who doesn't fit that label, and who self-identifies as "queer" and who likes the political and cultural aspects of that label, it also does the queer movement a lot of harm. Wow, long comment. Thanks for the link :)
