Mar. 12th, 2006 08:29 amWent to see the New Pornographers and Belle and Sebastian last night with Graham and Don. The venue (Milwaukee's Riverside Theater) was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen a show. I didn't know the bands too well before heading to the show, but both were good and it was a fun evening. The New Pornographers made more of their opening timeslot than I've ever heard another band do -- they played for a full hour with barely ten seconds between each song for applause and retuning. Great music, great energy; just good clean straight-ahead rock. Belle and Sebastian are a band I enjoy listening to and it was neat to see them live, but overall I think I prefer them on CD; as Graham said, "They've got seven people up there and it still doesn't sound as full as one of their albums." Plus, for me the joy of their sound is its clean, light feeling, and that's just harder to get across when you're amped up to eleven.
Seeing a concert in Milwaukee turns out not to be too insane if you've got a car. Sigur Rós are playing the same venue on Wed., May 10; anyone interested? The three of us are going for sure. (Also, one of the perks of driving to Milwaukee with me and Graham is that we know where you can find eclairs as big as your head. If eclairs aren't your thing, don't worry, they also serve cream puffs as big as canteloupes, elephant ears as big as hubcaps, and ice cream sundaes as big as oh my god I think I am going to be sick.)
(ETA: Another thing I like to do at concerts is check out the other people attending. At most shows nowadays I feel painfully un-hip, but I actually didn't feel too out of place at this concert; a good chunk of the women were all dolled up like chicks, but the men looked pretty normal and not too intimidating. Also, I would like to note that my favorite thing about modern fashion is that it's OK for men to have hair. I'm not even talking shaggy longhair hippieness, just... not that incredibly severe half-inch-or-less style that seemed to be the standard for so long. I mean, yeah, a few people can't easily manage longer hair because it turns into an Isro in the worst way, but in most cases I think men look better with some kinda mop on top.)
