i think this poll is partially dependant on the nature of the scheduled hours. I hate having days sucked up by meetings because it means I have less time to work on my research. I also hate days where the meetings are in the middle of everything because undoubtably I am being super productive when I have to leave and attend a meeting.
I didn't answer the last two because it really depends on what the hours are scheduled with. Six hours of meetings? Way less cool. But any scheduling at all, compared to a vacation day? Way better.
By the way, 4.5 hours/day is really my answer, but you only gave 4 and 5 as options ;).
At first, I was going to say that I feel better on a day when I'm scheduled but then I remembered how I feel after three days at a professional conference being completely scheduled from the time I wake to the time my head hits the pillow. Maybe a little more scheduling is good for me but not going completely overboard.
Ah, OK then, we were interpreting it differently. (I interpreted "scheduled" as "I am required to be accomplishing particular duties in particular places at particular times". So, for me, those are four periods of teaching + study hall + lunch supervision + advisor, which is about 4.5 hours. I'm required to be *at work* from, uh, 7:45 to 3, something like that, and if I actually want to get my work *done* I have to be there until between 4 and 6, but no one tells me where or when I have to do the rest of my work so I don't count it as "scheduled".)
Lately most of my hours are "scheduled" by me. 9-12 work on grant 12-1 eat lunch 1-2 meeting 2-7 work at coffee shop 7-9 make/eat dinner relax 9-11 work 11-12 relax before bed.
Most days there are about 2 hours of exercise scheduled in their too.
For times when i'm busy (like now) this kind of planning is necessary to maintain my sanity.
Yeah, after reading the comments, I'm holding out for a definitive definition by the poll author on what exactly "scheduled" means before I fill it out. I could easily answer 1, 8, or 11 depending.
I did what someone else said they did -- said that I was happier on less scheduled and more scheduled days. I really like it a lot when my day goes from one activity to the next. I also like it when I have a big chunk of time free to either do research/work, run errands, or something else that needs a bunch of time clumped together. The days I hate the most are the ones where there are a few scheduled events here and there that split up the day into a mess of unproductivity. In fact...today was a little bit like that.
I wasn't sure what counts as a "work day" in my situation, so I just read it as "on a typical day". Also, "the same" isn't really an accurate answer, but I picked it for both because in both cases it's a better answer than either "better" or "worse". That doesn't mean "the same", it just means "neither better nor worse".
