The artist behind the first webcomic I ever enjoyed came out today as transgender. I had one of those celebrity crushes on him for quite some time, and now, presto... he's a woman! I wonder if that makes me a retroactive lesbian? :)

Seriously, though, it seems to me that as long as gender identity and sexual identity are viewed categorically, you'll wind up with relationships that you can't explain very easily. Like "I'm a gay man in a relationship with someone who's now a woman," or "I'm a straight woman in a relationship with someone who plans to transition to life as a man next year." Not that moving from category to continuum makes anything easier to describe in words, really, but at least you wouldn't come across these ... pseudocontradictions, where the relationship makes total sense, actually, and it's only that you don't have the right words to make other people see how it all fits.

i think you can get the words to make it all make sense, as long as the person you're explaining to doesn't make assumptions.

I ran into some awkward wording when trying to talk about an experience a friend of mine had. The wording suggested to me was: He had an abortion when he was a young woman.

I think as people get more used to transgender, these things will become easier to discuss as people will figure out what that means fairly quickly and easily. We're just not quite there yet.

I can't wait until all of this stuff is so mundane, that it does not even register on people's everyday, "walking down the street" thoughts. It bugs me that in the english language we do not really have, singular, neutral pronouns to refer to people. At least in german you can use Sie (although, you'll probably sound idiotic using it all the time, or like a butler).

In our current period of time, we really don't have a very good selection of singular words to define all of the different combinations of love/lust. I'm all for trying to use the most clear, concise language possible, in conversation.

In my own fantasies about becoming a woman, I always envision myself as a lesbian. That could possibly be the dumbest mating strategy ever.

Anywhooooo. . .it is time to go feed my female-eunuch kitty.

You know, some people are trying to introduce the word "ze," which I just realized sounds more or less exactly like "Sie" :).

Would it be wise to create another homonym in the english language? I'm kind of fed up with english. Did you know that Wikipedia is also in Esperanto?

Homonymous with what? The letter Z? I can't think of anything else that sounds the same... and the other alphabet-sound-alikes don't cause many problems (a, bee, sea/see, de-, gee!, I, jay, cay, oh, pee, queue, tea/tee, you/ewe, ex, why?).

Also, I think I did know that about Wikipedia, and I think it's kind of funny but also kind of lame ;).
